HORMONE BALANCING MATCHA LATTE
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Matcha is made from the tea plant Camellia Sinensis, which produces tencha tea. The big difference between Matcha and other green tea is that Matcha is grown in the shade, which increases the amount of chlorophyll in it, which gives it its bright green color. Regular green tea comes from this same plant, but the leaves are usually consumed via tea bags. Matcha is made by grinding up the pure green tea leaves into a powder, creating a much more concentrated version. Research has shown Matcha has the ability to boost heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, prevent memory loss and brain cell damage, prevent insulin resistance, promote bone health and protect your vision. A study found that Matcha has three times the amount of EGCG than regular green tea. EGCG is a catechin (a class of antioxidants) which has anti-tumor and cancer preventing properties. Matcha may also provide relaxation and increased focus as it contains high levels of L-theanine which promotes a sense of overall well-being and calm.
Maca has been around for thousands of years originating in the Peruvian Andes and considered a superfood that has been used for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The Maca root is dried and then generally ground into a powder. Most people describe it as having a caramel flavor, with some leaning more toward a nutty, butterscotch, or earthy taste. There are three different types of Maca, each with their own health benefits. The Maca root powder I use is yellow Maca which is associated with hormone balance, increased libido and overall reproductive health for women. It has also shown to increase fertility and testosterone in men and shown to have powerful affects on the brain strengthening learning ability and memory. Other studies show its mood-enhancing and antidepressant effects as well. Yellow maca is a nutritional powerhouse, containing nearly all essential amino acids and fatty acids, significant levels of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, and C, minerals iron, magnesium, zinc and calcium and a high concentration of bio-available protein and nutrients unique to Maca called macaenes and macamides. Maca is also an "adaptogen," that is thought to raise the overall life force energy of those who consume it.
